Vipers training camp: Day 15
HOUSTON -- The calendar said Monday, but all eyes were on Tuesday.
That is when the Vipers will face off against the New York Guardians in their last scrimmage of training camp. For the players, that means one last chance to make an impression before final roster cuts are due Wednesday.
"We still have some positions to fill," head coach Marc Trestman said. "We really haven't decided on the entire 52-man squad."
Trestman said that he wants to make sure everyone gets playing time Tuesday.
"The goal is to get everybody in and give everybody an opportunity to get on tape," he said. "We're going to have to cut 18 guys and we want to give them every opportunity, if they can't be with us, to be with another team in the league."
"We're going to have cut 18 guys and we want to give them every opportunity, if they can't be with us, to be with another team in the league."
Even with the cuts looming, spirits appeared to be high at Monday's walk-thru.
"I feel like the aura around the team is definitely a positive one," defensive tackle Josh Banks said. "It doesn't feel like we're going to have anyone go home. It's a good vibe."
"You just gotta control what you can control," wide receiver Ryan Davis said. "Enjoy the guys around you while you can. At the end of the day, those are decisions that are above our power ... so we're just hoping for the best."
Tuesday's scrimmage is also crucial for another reason. It will be a preview of Week 1, as the Vipers will be squaring off against the Guardians in the season opener on Feb. 9th (@ New York, 2 P.M., FOX).
