BattleHawks Training Camp: Day 14

HOUSTON -- The St. Louis BattleHawks capped off their second week of training camp with a joint scrimmage against the Dallas Renegades on Saturday.

The teams will get well acquainted with another scrimmage coming up on Monday, and then they'll square off in Week 1 of the XFL season on Feb. 9.

BattleHawks head coach Jonathan Hayes and Renegades head coach Bob Stoops, along with BattleHawks offensive coordinator Chuck Long, all played together at Iowa in 1982, and all three coached at Oklahoma when the Sooners won the national championship in 2000.

With the coaches' long history and friendship, the practice today was upbeat and genial.

Hayes did talk about how much he was going to enjoy facing off against Stoops on the field for the first time. "We've known each other so long," Hayes said. "He's a very competitive person, I'm a very competitive person. We'll have fun doing it it. We're looking forward to it."

Obviously in these settings, there's not a lot you can show because you don't want to give too much away to an opposing team, so it's all about working on the little things.

"You get to practice against another group of people and you get to keep working on things that you can get better at," said Hayes. "The fundamentals are always there to work on and those are the things we want to continue to build on."

"You have to make sure everyone's in the right position and knowing the right things. If we can't do that, it doesn't matter all the exotic things you can call. If you can't get it right it really doesn't matter."

The joint praactice did give the teams another opportunity to get used to the new kickoffs against a different opponent.

Wide receiver Keith Mumphery was able to find a seam and take one back against his former team.

Speaking of former teams, the BattleHawks made a trade on Friday to acquire two new players -- cornerback David Rivers and tackle Brian Wallace -- who got to show their stuff for the first time at the joint practice.

And after Friday's practice, the three BattleHawks quarterbacks took part in a game of PIG. Check it out to see who came out on top.
