Inside Defenders minicamp: Day 4

DC Defenders WR Tyler Palka at team minicamp

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Day 4 of DC Defenders minicamp was an important one.

The helmets were put on, and the intensity level definitely picked up.

Quarterbacks Cardale Jones, Tyree Jackson and Vad Lee were putting some extra sauce on their passes. Linemen like Sam Montgomery and Elijah Qualls hit the tackling dummies with some extra meat.

The music inside Cole Field House wasn't the only thing bumping.

Monday felt like a real football practice and with just 61 days until the season-opener against the Seattle Dragons, it was a welcomed change.

The tagline of the day was iron sharpens iron. It's sports cliche to many, but to those in the forge, it means something.

Defenders Standout of the Day: Tyler Palka, WR

The 24-year-old Michigan native who spent time at Saginaw Valley State and Gannon University as a quarterback has made the full switch to wide receiver, and on Monday, he showed why.

Tyler Palka caught everything thrown his way, and even some of the passes that weren't. But it wasn't just his pass-catching that stood out, but his crisp route-running and explosiveness on cuts and after making the catch.

At 6-2, he's one of the bigger members of the Defenders receiving corps, and that explosiveness will come in handy when it's time to shed a handful of tacklers.

Cole Stroll, Ep.3: Matt Elam, LB

It was a rainy Monday, so episode 3 of the Cole Stroll took place inside the bubble at Maryland's state-of-the-art practice facility.

Former Baltimore Ravens first-round pick Matt Elam dished on what it's like to be back on the field, how he always brings energy, and whether or not he's the best dancer on the team.

Competition should be fun. If it's not fun, then it's just another job.

The end of Day 4 minicamp was both a heated competition and a whole lot of fun.

Queue the aforementioned Elam to bring the noise.

The Defenders return to Cole Field House for Day 5 of training camp. We're just two days away from XFL commissioner Oliver Luck making a stop in D.C. to visit the Defenders and to visit Defenders fans at a very special meet and greet.
