BattleHawks Training Camp: Day 1
HOUSTON -- It's officially time for BattleHawks football in 2020. The team landed in Houston on Friday and kicked off training camp today with their first practice.
The BattleHawks will be training and practicing at gorgeous W.W. Thorne Stadium in north Houston.
The team could not have asked for a better day to start. It was 70 degrees and sunny and the coaching staff was especially excited to get a break from the St. Louis winter, especially after this happened during minicamp.
There are a few new faces on the BattleHawks since minicamp. WR Keith Mumphery was aquired from the Dallas Renegades via trade and seven other players were signed prior to training camp:
Daniel Braverman, WR - Western Michigan
Mik'Quan Deane, TE - Western Kentucky
Sean Hickey, OG - Syracuse
Alex Jenkins, DE - Incarnate Word
Jay Liggins, CB - Dickinson State
Charles Tuaau, DT - Texas A&M Commerce
Brandon Watson, OT - MidAmerica Nazarene
Mumphery and Braverman in particular took some reps returning punts today. Head coach Jonathan Hayes spoke to that:
Any new guys you bring in, you want to find out about them as quickly as you can. Since they've [returned punts] in the past we wanted to see if they still had a feel for it and had a comfort level with it. They showed that they can still do it. We just want to get a feel for where everyone on the team is.
Coach Hayes also made it clear that he wanted this team ready mentally more than anything.
"The main thing is just the execution," Hayes said. "Getting it back in their head. Making sure they understand the verbage so that they can get out there and play fast."
But when it came to making plays, connections that were made in minicamp are already popping back up here in Houston.
There are still 17 days left in training camp, so you can bet that things will be ramping up soon. But for now, our guys are just excited to be back doing what they love: playing football.
