Vipers training camp: Day 13

Wide Receiver Antonio Callaway on his first day at Vipers training camp

HOUSTON -- Right now, the Vipers' biggest rival isn't another team.

It's time.

With only five days left in training camp, the players have a short window to prove they deserve a spot on the 52-man roster.

"The competition is fierce," head coach Marc Trestman said. "Our players came out today like they knew every play mattered. I was really proud of the way we practiced."

Since the team had Thursday off, Friday was the team's first chance to make adjustments based on Wednesday's scrimmage against the Seattle Dragons.

"We needed to continue to work at improving our precision, particularly in the passing game," Trestman said.

"We've installed a ton of plays," quarterback Aaron Murray said. "When you look at our playbook, there's a lot of stuff that's been in. We've repped those plays one or two times. Now that we have the opportunity to run them for a third time, a fourth time, a fifth time, we can take them to the next level, get to our reads faster and be on time."

There was a new player catching those passes at Friday's practice -- former Cleveland Browns and Florida Gators wide receiver Antonio Callaway.

A 4th-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Callaway recorded five touchdown catches and 675 receiving yards over the past two seasons with the Browns.

"I thought this was the perfect opportunity to show people I love the sport," Callaway said. "I felt right at home as soon as I got here ... just ready to get to work with these guys."

"There are no givens here," Trestman said about Callaway. "He knows he's got to earn it. He's actively trying to learn the offense so he can get out there and perform. We'll try to get him some opportunities over the next two practices with New York."

On Saturday, the team will hold a joint practice against the New York Guardians, their opponent in Week 1 of the regular season (@ New York, 2 p.m. ET, FOX). the two teams will also scrimmage on Monday.
