Week 5 Matchups to Watch: Guardians vs Renegades

The 2-2 New York Guardians hit the road again this week traveling to Dallas to take on the 2-2 Renegades. The Guardians are coming off a home win against the LA Wildcats while the Renegades dropped their last game at home to the Roughnecks.

The road has not been kind to the Guardians this season. They are looking for their first road win of the season. Conversely, the Renegades are winless in two games at home this season. Both teams will be looking to end these streaks.

Here are some key player matchups to watch:

Quarterbacks

If you look at the Guardians depth chart, it shows Luis Perez as third behind Matt McGloin and Marquise Williams. But Guardians Head coach Kevin Gilbride called on number 7 last week and it turned out lucky for New York.

Perez has completed nearly seventy percent of his passes this season, which ranks fourth in the league, and has thrown for two touchdowns which leads the team. With starter Landry Jones out at least a couple of weeks with a knee injury, Dallas will turn the ball over to backup Phillip Nelson. In two games this season, Nelson has completed just over seventy-five percent of his passes.

The Texas Two-Step

We could be seeing some fast feet when the Guardians and Renegades mix it up on Saturday as the game will feature four of the top ten running backs in the league.

New York’s Darius Victor ranks seventh in the league in total rushing yards and Tim Cook, ranks ninth. Meanwhile, Dallas features Cameron Artis-Payne, who sits fourth in the league in rushing yards and his teammate Lance Dunbar is eighth.

Look for both teams to get the running game going so they can spread the field and get the ball to their playmakers over the middle or on the outside. For New York, look for TE Jake Powell to be one of those targets and for Dallas, TE Donald Parham is second in the league in receiving yards.

Defense

The Guardians have been pretty good this season at getting after the quarterback. As a team, they are second in the league with ten sacks. They have three of the top five sack leaders in the league with Cavon Walker leading everyone with 2.5 sacks. In addition to sacks, the Guardians have been pretty good about getting into opponent’s backfields. Bunmi Rotimi is second in the league at tackles for loss and Ben Heeney is sixth.

Dallas’ defense has also been stout this season also. They rank third in the league in rushing yards against and fourth in the league in passing yards against. They are led by a trio of linebackers Asantay BrownTegray Scales and Greer Martini who lead the Renegades in tackles in that order.
